Why was the 1929 Buick considered to be
a design failure?

Harvey Earl designed the closed models to be much less bulbous. The engineering department redesigned the models for ease in tooling. The result was the six inch bulge at the beltline. It was not met with the public's greatest acceptance as aesthetic, thus was born the pregnant Buick.
